Naturopathic Doctors hold a doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine (ND or NMD) from an accredited Naturopathic Medical School. The four-year post-graduate training is unique in that Naturopathic Doctors study all the conventional medical sciences while also completing extensive academic and clinical education in the use of natural medicines. Medical science coursework includes Cardiology, Neurology, Radiology,
Obstetrics, Gynecology, Immunology, Dermatology, and Pediatrics. Natural Science coursework includes (but is not limited to Nutrition, Homeopathic Medicine, Botanical Medicine, Physical Medicine, Counseling, and Pharmaceuticals.
Naturopathic Doctors take national medical board exams, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Exam (NPLEX), and attain a state license where licensing is available.* In licensed states, NMD’s serve as primary care physicians with the ability to diagnose and treat medical conditions, perform physical exams, and order laboratory testing. In states which do not currently license Naturopathic Doctors, as is the case in Texas, NMD’s may serve as Natural Health Consultants.
