Safflower Oils... Wake up your body.

Most of us are used to using organic virgin olive oil as our main oil booster, recently we have started to see the benefits of some other oils too.  Dr Oz recently had a lot of information on the wonderful benefits of this oil, and you can see his info here too. Some of the health benefits of safflower oil include its ability to lower cholesterol levels, manage blood sugar, aid in weight loss, improve hair health, boost skin health, reduce the symptoms of PMS, control muscle contractions, and improve the immune system.

Safflower is an annual, thistle-like plant with many branches and little known use except for its oil, safflower oil. Fortunately, this oil is extremely valuable and is extracted from the seeds. In the past, safflower seeds were typically used for dyes, but they have had a range of uses over the last few thousand years. It has been an important plant for cultures dating back to the Greeks and the Egyptians.

There are approximately 60 countries around the world that cultivate this crop, but the overall yield is rather small, only about 600,000 tons per year around the world. In modern history, the vegetable oil that is extracted from the seeds is the most valuable element of the plant, and the majority of production is used for that purpose. The oil, however, is a good replacement for other, less healthy vegetable oils that are widely used, so the market continues to increase around the world. The health benefits of this oil, rather than more traditional vegetable oils, are significant and are outlined in more detail below.

So Many Health Benefits of Safflower Oil

Heart Health: Safflower oil has been shown to have a very high content of omega-6 fatty acids, which is a beneficial type of fatty acid that our body needs. It is otherwise known as linoleic acid. This acid can help the body to keep a healthy balance of cholesterol in the body, which decreases the chances of developing atherosclerosis, as well as the other health conditions, such as heart attacks and strokes, that are often the result of this condition.

Diabetes: The omega-6 fatty acid has also been shown to manage blood sugar levels, thereby helping those people who suffer from diabetes to keep their blood sugar even. This can also prevent people from developing diabetes.

Obesity: This has long been known as a good choice for those people who are trying their best to lose weight. Omega-6 fatty acids, of which safflower oil is rich, helps the body to burn fat, rather than store it. This makes safflower oil very valuable, since vegetable oil is used in so many cooking preparations, and it can be used by people to lose weight, if they find it difficult to make too many changes to their diet.

Hair Health: Safflower oil is also rich in oleic acid, which is very beneficial for beauty, hair strength, shine and vitality. This vitamin increases circulation on the scalp, stimulating hair growth and strength in the follicles. It can also help to keep your hair shiny and vibrant, so it is often used in cosmetic applications. However, it also does the same thing if consumed as food.

Skin: The high content of linoleic acid in safflower oil makes it ideal for boosting the quality and appearance of your skin. The linoleic acid can combine with sebum to unclog the pores and reduce blackheads, as well as acne, which is a result of sebum build-up under the skin. Furthermore, linoleic acid stimulates the regeneration of new skin cells, meaning that it helps to clear up scars and other blemishes from the surface of the skin, leaving you looking younger and more attractive!

PMS: For women going through menstruation, it can be a painful and uncomfortable time. Safflower oil’s linoleic acid regulates the prostaglandins in the body, which can cause such dramatic hormonal fluctuations and symptoms during menses. Therefore, safflower oil can decrease the severity of the PMS symptoms and can also regulate menstrual cycles, just like hormonal supplements, without the dangerous side effects.

Immune System Health: Although they regulate the function of prostaglandins, safflower oil also contributes the omega-6 fatty acids that create prostaglandins. PLEASE do take note: If you have a problem with blood clotting, it is best not to use safflower oil, because it can dramatically slow down blood clotting, since it is a blood thinner. Also, if you have an allergy to ragweed or others in that similar family, avoid safflower oil, since it is that botanical family and it can cause allergic reactions of varying severity.

We all face stress at one point or another and sometimes we deal with stress quite often. Wouldn't it be nice to be free of stress and the symptoms it can cause? Wouldn't it be nice if we knew a few ways to help us relive stress? Well, you are in luck! Today we are going to discuss what stress is, what eustress (good stress) and distress (bad stress) are, how to deal with stress, and some products we recommend.

What is Stress?

Stress is the brain’s response from a very demanding circumstance. This response can come as emotional, mental, or physical symptoms. Anything can trigger a stress response, such as a small event or a larger event. Not all stress is bad, however, and some stress is good for us. Stress often releases a hormone called Cortisol. Cortisol is released by the adrenal glands as part of the fight or flight response. In small amounts, Cortisol is healthy for our bodies, but if Cortisol is chronically released, this can lead to several problems.

Eustress (Good stress) vs. Distress (Bad stress)

Eustress is defined as positive stress and is good for us. This type of stress keeps us focused and motivated. It is often short-term and makes us feel excited. Eustress is considered to be within our coping abilities and helps us improve performance. This type of stress can occur from the start of a new job or getting married.

Distress is defined as negative stress and this is often what leads to many mental, physical, and emotional symptoms. This type of stress can be short term or long term. It often causes anxiety and concern and is considered to fall outside of our coping abilities. With this type of stress, our performance is decreased and we can end up becoming ill because of it. Some examples include unemployment or a tragic event.

How do Stress and Cortisol affect the body?

When we are overly stressed, too much cortisol is released into our body. Chronically elevated cortisol can lead to weight gain, suppressed immune function, hormone imbalance, blood sugar imbalance, fatigue, anxiety, sleep disorders, and other dis-eases.

When we have chronic stress, and cortisol is released continuously, it can wreak havoc on our bodies. It suppresses the immune system, which makes your body more susceptible to seasonal cold and flu viruses, as well as other illnesses. Studies show that chronic stress can even lead to various types of cancer and auto-immune diseases. Stress also prevents our digestive, reproductive, and excretory systems from working properly. This can cause a whole array of symptoms. Some people have digestive issues due to chronic stress. For others, it may interfere with their mood, leading into depression, and their quantity and quality of sleep. Some can become irritable and restlessness.

It is important to note that if you are chronically stressed, elevated cortisol can be the reason for the symptoms you are experiencing. That is the bad news, but the good news is there are several tips and products we recommend to help cope and deal with stress.

Tips for dealing with stress

The first tip in dealing with stress is to be more physically active and engage in more exercise. When you feel stressed, go for a walk or head to the gym. Exercising helps the body stay calm and stabilize those hormones that are released during stressful situations. We recommend exercising at least 30 minutes, 4-5 days a week. The more days you are physically active, the better. This not only will help with stress, but can also improve your quality of sleep.

Since we brought up sleep, this is also important when dealing with stress. Although stress can trigger sleep problems in some people, it is necessary to get as much sleep as possible. Before going to bed, it is best to try and get into a relaxed state and doing something calming, like reading an undemanding book or taking a warm bath.

The third tip we have in dealing with stress is doing relaxation or meditation techniques. You can do these almost anywhere. We recommend spending 10-15 minutes per day in a quiet area. While doing this, focus on positive words and thoughts.

Another great tip for reducing stress is to simply step outside. Nature in itself is calming. Take off your shoes and stand in the grass. This is also known as "earthing" and many recent studies have shown this connection with the earth to be extremely calming. It has been shown to restore normal bioelectrical patterns within our body as well, which means it is balancing to our system.

A fifth tip is to manage your time and learn to say ‘No.’ Some of us tend to take on too much and when we have a hard time saying no or speaking up, it can certainly lead to anxiety and stress. It is important to be able to know your limits and manage your time. It is also best to set aside time for relaxing. If you can compartmentalize and keep work at work and home at home, this will certainly help reduce your stress.

There are so many things you can do to reduce stress and it is important to find something you like and be consistent. Whether that is going for a walk, reading, meditating, exercising, or just spending time with family and friends, there is something for everyone. There are also products that can help too!

What are Emotions?

Emotions are a big part of our daily lives. Emotions are defined as a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one’s circumstances, mood, or relationships with others. It is an instinctive or intuitive feeling as distinguished from reasoning or knowledge. Whether we are happy, sad, angry, or frustrated, we base many of our decisions on the emotions we feel at that moment. According to Hockenbury & Hockenbury (2007), “an emotion is a complex psychological state that involves three distinct components: a subjective experience, a physiological experience, and a behavioral or expressive response.”

So what exactly are these three distinct components that are discussed. The subjective experience is how we react to emotions, such as happiness, sadness, anger, or fear.  Researchers believe that these emotions are subjective because they are unique to each individual. We each deal with our emotions in many different ways. For example, anger, in one person can simply be shown as minor irritation, whereas in other people, it can mean relentless rage. The physiological experience is what we physically feel in our bodies in relation to the emotions we feel. Many people feel there hear racing when they feel scared or anxious or when we feel fatigued when we are sad. We each feel different physiological responses due to the emotions we are experiencing, which is why it is important to face them head on. Lastly, the behavioral or expressive response is how we act upon the emotions we are experiencing. We tend to see this in people’s actions and body language.

What is Emotional Toxicity?

Toxic emotions are emotions, such as anger or stress that have an adverse effect on a person’s mental and possibly physical health. These emotions can be built up and stored in our mind slowly manifesting like poison. This can lead to serious symptoms and/or health problems. Take a second to think about a time when someone treating you in a mean or unfriendly way. As you think of this unpleasant moment, you begin to experience certain emotions related to the incident, whether it be a little frustration or anger. These feelings are toxic emotions.

Toxic emotions can be short-term or long-term and depending on how we react to certain events, we deal with these emotions in different ways. They develop slowly sometimes, but may in turn have long-term effects on our body. It is important to clear up these issues or to deal with them somehow to prevent the poison from leaking into the rest of the body.

The Impact of our Emotions!

If emotional stress is left to long without intervention, it can become “toxic”. This messes up the natural homeostatic health and balance of the body and mind. Research proves that our mental outlook and emotions impact our body’s physiological processes. So, in other words, what does this look like? We start experiencing a variety of symptoms from the emotions that we hold in, especially anger, stress, frustration, or even sadness. These can include changes in our sleep cycle, inability to relax, or lack of concentration and focus. These emotions can also begin to affect our relationships and create distance and isolation.

Most people don’t realize that our emotions, especially when we bottle the up inside can have a real impact on our health. It is vital that we get to the root cause of our emotions, especially when we are angry, sad, or stressed. Comparable to a suppurating splinter in a finger, if left there long enough, it can cause all kinds of havoc in the body. Emotional toxicity is the least talked about in the general health conversation, and yet as we see in daily practice, one of the most vital. No physical health can be totally restored, until emotional health is also in balance. The wonderful thing about Naturopathic medicine is that it draws on the body AS A WHOLE, to come into balance. An inability to grieve the death of a loved one, and to move through the grief process, is JUST as vital a situation to treat as any major physical the person may present. Mental and emotional health is at the top of the list to restore proper functioning of the entire body because often times this is the source of many of the physiological symptoms people feel.

Emotions and Toxic Relationships

We are all surrounded by a variety of different relationships. These include with our families, friends, and significant others. We often don't realize that some of our relationships are toxic and being with or around a toxic person can be emotionally draining. Unhealthy relationships create not only psychological issues, but can also cause physiological problems as well.

There are so many toxic behaviors that we may experience in the relationships that we have. Whether we are around someone is who is passive-aggressive, mean and abusive, constantly negative, or puts you down. These can cause harm to us, both emotionally and physically, and can lead to serious health problems.

It is important to get out of these toxic relationships and to surround yourself with positive, healthy relationships. Changing the people you surround yourself with can improve your health and prevent you from becoming numb and disconnected and ill.

How to Deal with Emotions?

We all know that stress can wreak havoc on our body, but what we forget is how we can curb the effects and emotions when we pay attention to our breath. Mindfulness is simply being aware of what is going on in our internal world and making the effort to be present with it.  When anxiety shows up, our breath tends to be shallow and mainly in our chest and emotions tend to amp up and leave us feeling scattered and powerless. It's not by chance, our emotions are held in the heart in the center of the lungs. If we use only half of the respiratory system, we will find ourselves hanging out in the "fight or flight response" more than we would like. The good news is that we don't have to set up camp in this place, we can change our breathing patterns and our response to emotional stress by simply breathing into the abdomen. Employ diaphragmatic breathing to fire up the stress relief hormone serotonin and endorphins and the nervous system will quickly campaign a state of relaxation. Abdominal breathing has been used for centuries in mindful practices such as yoga and meditation to help students drop out of over thinking and enter a state of being centered and grounded. Don't wait until the next time you are stressed to give the technique below a whirl, tonight before you fall asleep, set your timer for five minutes and allow yourself to breathe and simply relax. 

Belly Breath

1.Find a place to sit down comfortably, preferably a place that you won't be disturbed for five minutes.
2. Set five minutes on your timer.
3. Place one hand on your abdomen and one hand on your chest. You may put a pillow underneath each arm to offer support.
4. If comfortable close the eyes, if not, find something to visually focus on.
5. Slowly breathe in through the nose and out of the mouth. Allow the natural space in between your jaw to be open and let the muscles of the face relax.
6. Breathe deeply into the belly and feel your hand rise and fall with each breath.
7. Pay attention to the softening taking place throughout each part of the body beginning with the muscles around the ears, neck. shoulders, hands, abdomen, thighs, calves, to the bottom of the feet.
8. When the mind wanders, gently bring it back to the breath.
9. When the timer goes off and you have opened your eyes take four more breaths before getting up.

Some of these may include talking it out with someone, whether it is with a doctor, family, or a friend. What is water? What is water made of?

Water is a transparent, colorless, tasteless, odorless liquid that forms the seas, lakes, rivers, and rain and is the basis of the fluids of living organisms.

Water, like everything else, is made of atoms. Atoms are the smallest particle of an element and when they join together, they form molecules. A water molecule is made up of three atoms: 2 Hydrogen (H) atoms and 1 Oxygen (O) atom, otherwise known as H2O.

What exactly is the importance of water?

Well as many of you know water is important to all living things. Some organisms have up to 90% of their body weight coming from water. For us humans, 70% of the human adult body is made up of water.

From that 70%, this is how our organs breakdown. Our brain is composed of 83% water, our heart is composed of 75% water, our lungs are composed of about 85% water, our skin is about 64%, our muscles and kidneys are about 79%, and our bones, yes even our bones, have about 31% water.

So…if you don’t think water is important, well think again!!! Think about just how much water we use daily, from drinking water, to washing our hands in water, to taking a shower, and so much more.

It is important to continue to drink water throughout the day. Everyone should drink at least half of his or her own body weight of water daily. We lose almost 2 to 3 quarts of water a day, so of course we need to replenish this loss by drinking water.

As I mentioned, every part of our body requires water and if we are not drinking enough, we become dehydrated, which prevents our body from working efficiently. It is especially important to drink clean water, to cook with clean water, and to bathe in clean water.

Why is that essential?

It is essential to get rid of, or filter the toxins in our water because these toxins can be persistent toxins. This means that they are not easily excreted from our body, and they will accumulate and this can cause many issues. Remember, this accumulation adds onto our total body burden, which can rob us of our nutrients and cause chronic imbalances or dis-eases of the immune, endocrine, and neurologial systems. What is Air?

You might think this is a silly question, but nonetheless, a very important question. Air is the invisible gaseous substance surrounding the earth and it supplies us with oxygen, which is essential to our bodies. You knew that, didn’t you!!

Do you know the components of air? Come on, I know that you do.

Air is made up of 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, and <1% Argon, Carbon Dioxide, and other gases. As you can tell, it is mainly a mixture of Nitrogen and Oxygen.

Want to know a fun fact? Adults’ breath 10-20 cubic meters per day, which is about 20, 000 breathes. Children breathe twice that, so they take in 20-40 cubic meters, which is about 40,000 breathes.

When we think of air, we immediately think of the air that we breathe when we are outside. Well, unfortunately, we don’t have control over the air we breathe outside. Although, there is not a whole lot we can do with the quality of the air we breathe outside, there is one thing you can do.

The quality of outdoor isn’t our biggest concern. One huge and complex issue is indoor air quality. Want to know another fun fact? Indoor air is 3 to 5 times WORSE than outdoor air.

The Environmental Protection Agency has done several studies showing that the highest concentration of chemical air pollutants are inside, not outside, the home. Why, you ask? Think about it for a second! We fill our airtight homes with man-made carpets, cleaners, furniture, fragrances, etc. These products are all made from petrochemical products, solvents, and formaldehydes!

We breathe in so many irritants that we cannot see and many of them can lead and cause disease and illness. According to Dr. Robert Groves, ND, “Just because you have clean air does not mean you have clean air.”

Air that is polluted and filled with irritants can cause many of these common respiratory conditions including asthma, pneumonia, allergies, lung cancer, and many more. The irritants that get into our bodies and stay in our cells and organs can cause damage that can lead to bigger problems.

What Else Should You Consider That Could Be Affecting Your Indoor Air?

Molds and Mold spores!! Always check and make sure there are no leaks or moisture build up that can lead to molds and mold growth.

I know this from personal experience. Moving to Houston, well that was a big risk. Living in an apartment that had the worst mold infestation I had ever seen, well, wasn’t what I had planned when I moved here.

I was breathing mold spores for two months and considering that I am really sensitive, I was getting sick often and my allergies were just killing me.

Thankfully, I got out of that apartment, but the reality is mold is dangerous and unhealthy and you definitely don’t want to breathe it in.

When we breathe air that is full of toxins and pollutants, it directly affects our health, causing a plethora of symptoms and illnesses. These can lead to more serious illnesses and disease.

When we breathe clean air, we are taking care of our bodies but more importantly we are keeping our immune system strong.

Clean air and our immune system are inextricably linked. Breathing clean air is one of the biggest and most important aspects we need to focus on to keep our physical health optimal.

Why is that important? Well we breathe more than we do anything else, whether we are indoors or outdoors.

How Can We Get Clean Air?

Cleaning both indoor and outdoor is much simpler than you may think. Trust me!! Small changes can make a big difference. We can’t completely avoid toxins or pollutants in the air, but we can certainly do some things to improve what we breathe in and reduce out total body burden (check out our Total Body Burden blog).

Tips for a Healthy Indoor Environment!

The first tip would be to remove and avoid sources of pollutants as much as possible. These include candles, paints, new carpeting, household cleaners, molds, pesticides, perfumes, etc.
The next tip would be to use natural plants to help filter your air, both indoor and outdoor. Did you know that some plants naturally purify the air you breathe? The top 5 plants identified by NASA are Mass cane, Pot Mum, Gerbera Daisy, Striped Dracaena, and Ficus.

A third tip would be to make sure you have home detectors, such as the ones for carbon monoxide and radon. These can help save your life, especially if there is carbon monoxide and/or radon in the air.
