As Easy as A . . .

Avena_sativa,_troshaver_(2).jpg

Having better health can be as easy as A, that is Avena sativa L.

For those of us who aren't fluent in botanical names maybe oats will ring a bell. This simple plant has the potential to change our health, which I find incredible.

Avena originates from the Middle East. From there it traveled to Europe and you can imagine how it made its way to the United States.

Whole oats

Whole oats contain many beneficial minerals including silica, iron, calcium, copper, magnesium, zinc and , vitamin B.  They also contain beta-glucans. This is a sugar that is found on the cell walls of plants such as oats and barley. Due to this sugar oats can be used to lower cholesterol naturally. Not only that but Avena contains enough vitamin B to help lower stress levels. Overall whole oats help to stimulate our immune system causing us to be able to fight disease.

Whole oats can be found at most grocery stores. Be aware of prepackaged oats, which contain artificial sugars and additives. For best results try organic whole oats.

Oatstraw

Oatstraw is the top of the oat plant. According to Dr Oz  "oatstraw has been used to support brain health since the Middle Ages, and its proponents say it can reduce the risk of heart disease, reduce anxiety, increase energy, and possibly even sexual performance."  The dried white tops of the oatstraw is used to make tea and tinctures.

You can buy avena here .

Oatmeal Extract

The oatmeal extract is the liquid from cooking oats. This mirky water is beneficial for soothing skin form sunburns. For skin conditions such as eczema and psoriases avena can help to heal the damage.

You can make your own or look for products that contain oatmeal extract in them, like this one here.

Over all consuming avena helps to better your health. Whether consumed as whole, extract or oatstraw, the benefits will be received. Here are some fun recipes to try to increase your oat intake.

Ready for Some Allergy Relief?

Erica Campbell Inc.

Suffering from sneezing? Runny nose? Red, Itchy, and watery eyes? Are you tired of allergies and allergy symptoms? Are you ready to say farewell to allergies?

There are many of us that suffer from seasonal allergies. Some of us experience symptoms worse than others, but more than anything, allergy symptoms are just such an annoyance. Natural medicines and herbs are a great way to help relieve allergy symptoms. Ever heard of Urtica Dioica, also known as nettle or stinging nettle.

Stinging nettle is a herb that has been used for centuries to treat allergies and allergy symptoms, especially the most common symptom, Hay Fever. Nettles have biologically active compounds that have been studied and proven in reducing allergic and other inflammatory responses. This study, performed by Roschek B Jr., Fink RC, McMichael M, and Alberte RS, showed the positive affects nettle had on the key receptors and enzymes associated with allergic rhinitis (2009).

Nettles have several properties that have been used as an antihistamine and anti-inflammatory. This herb is a great treatment option for allergies and for reducing or eliminating your allergy symptoms. There are several naturopathic treatments that can also be beneficial in helping with allergy symptoms.

The most common test that we do is our food intolerance testing, which shows the foods our body has trouble digesting because of certain enzymes we are missing. Often times when eliminating these foods, allergy symptoms can be eliminated. However, if you have done this test, adjusted your diet accordingly, and are still experiencing those pesky allergy symptoms, there is another test that we would recommend.

The other test is an Immunoglobulin E (IgE) or immunoglobulin G (IgG) mediated test. This test identifies specific allergy triggers, which may be environmental or from foods. Determining these triggers will allow us to customize a natural and homeopathic treatment that will help in reducing or eliminating allergy symptoms.

Along with the stinging nettle, there are a few products that we would recommend in providing relief from these symptoms. The first is Elderberry Syrup by Wise Woman Herbals. Elderberry syrup stimulates immune system health and promotes strength and integrity of the vascular walls. The second product is Buffered C Powder by Thorne Research. Buffered C Powder alkalinizes the body and reduces inflammation. It also optimizes both immune function and antioxidant support.

There is no need to continue suffering with allergy symptoms. Natural treatments are used to improve and alleviate these symptoms.

Products:
1. Urtica Dioica (Stinging Nettles), Wise Woman Herbals
2. Elderberry Syrup, Wise Woman Herbals
3. Buffered C Powder, Thorne Research

THE AMAZING SUNFLOWER

Erica Campbell Inc.

The sunflower is TRULY an AMAZING plant.

The sunflower (Helianthus Annuss) was an important part of the American Indian culture. The sunflower was a very important food source. The seeds were eaten as snacks, ground to into flour, and squeezed into oil. The flour and oil was used to make cakes and breads. The sunflower also was used as a plant medicine. The flower heads were used to make teas for pulmonary conditions, fevers and malaria.  The leaf and flower were used to make poultices for skin conditions or burns, and the roots were chewed and applied to snake or spider bites.

The sunflower was thought to provoke courage and protection. Sunflower cakes were sent with soldiers as they prepared for battle. Sunflower flour was also used as an offering during ceremonies and sunflower doll is an important icon for the natives, as they represent the gratitude for this plant.

The sunflower is a hearty plant. It is easy to grow and usually reseeds each year. I encourage you to plant the sunflower in your yard or garden and learn about the many ways you can use the sunflower!

The sunflower seeds can be eaten raw, they can be sprouted, or roasted. The are very nutritious and provide an excellent source of protein, healthy fats, calcium, iron, vitamin c, copper, manganese, and pantothenate (B5).  The seeds can be ground into a butter, similar to peanut or almond, which are usually hypoallergenic and therefore a good alternative for kids with peanut allergies. You can easily find sun butter at any health food store.

You can use sunflower flour as an alternative to regular wheat based flours and the oil is a good high-heat oil that also provides a grain-free alternative.

Add these beautiful petals to any salad for a special treat, as they are also edible and provide extra vitamin c. The petals can be dried and brewed into a tea for fevers or deep coughs. Boil the stems, leaves and flowers to make a soak that will soothe aches, pains and arthritis! The sunflower will also sweeten your romantic connections, as it is a powerful APHRODISIAC!

The sunflower is used to make flower essences. This can easily been done at home or you can purchase commercially produced versions. Flower essences are similar to homeopathy as they contain the essence or energy of the plant. This is one of my favorite flower essences and I use it often. The sunflower is associated with the 3rd chakra, our solar plexus or power center. It helps to empower and bring fourth courage! I recently gave it to my kids for their first few days of school and I usually use it on days where I am speaking in front of groups or when know that it is going to be a challenging.

Ahh... the amazing sunflower. Hope you get to know her.

FREQUENT UTI's or Chronic Urinary Issues?

Erica Campbell Inc.

Are you troubled with urinary track infections, frequent urination,  or chronic cystitis? The urinary track which includes the kidneys, the bladder, and the urethra, is very susceptible to inflammation. One of the primary sources of chronic inflammation in this organ system is FOOD!

The most common INFLAMMATORY foods are dairy, gluten, and sugar. Sugar suppresses our normal immune function which makes us more more susceptible to inflammation or infection. Eliminate these foods from your diet. Just a week, or two, is usually enough to calm the inflammatory load in your body which will allow for healing.

Proper hydration is also very important. When we are dehydrated we don't have enough fluids passing through our urinary track to keep things moving appropriately.  When fluids stagnate in the body, our bacteria become unbalanced which further feeds inflammation.

Proper bacterial balance in the urinary tract system is also critical for optimal health. Probiotics can be very beneficial to the urinary bladder and urinary tract system. Fermented foods like miso soup, Kombucha,  sauerkraut, or other fermented vegetables also help promote a healthy bacterial balance in the urinary track system.

If that is not enough support, I usually recommend cranberry concentrate with d-Mannose and several herbal remedies. The cranberry helps to acidify the urine while providing bacterial anti-adhesive properties, meaning the bacterial chains break apart which results in clearing of the infection. My two favorite herbals for urinary tract health are UVA URSI and GOLDENSEALUva ursi is widely used in Europe as a treatment for UTI's and this herb is approved in Germany for treatment of bladder infections! Goldenseal is a root that helps to treat many types of infections..

Hope you find this helpful. If you need further support, please let us know.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

Erica Campbell Inc.

The Calendula flowers are not only beautiful, they also have MANY useful medicinal properties! Calendula is a well known plant in the natural medicine community as the flower has been used for medicinal purposes since at least the 12th century.

Calendula helps to keep the body healthy as it helps to ward off illness. The flowers are antiseptic,  anti-inflammatory, and anti-viral. They are also considered a lymphogague, which means that they help to move the lymph, which decreases dampness, stagnation, and inflammation within the body.

Calendula helps to promote healing to almost any tissue in the body. Internally, it has been used as an antiseptic and healing mouth wash for gingivitis and other dental issues. Calendula helps to fight infection, and to promote healing. It has been used to treat stomach upset and ulcers. Externally, or topically, Calendula supports connective tissue and promotes wound healing, while also acting as an antiseptic. It is known to help regenerate epithelial tissue (skin cells) and therefore it is ideal for use with skin irritations such as rashes, burns, wounds, or abcesses.

Calendula is a very versatile plant and can be used in many forms. I like to make a strong calendula tea and use it to drink or as a wash or soak. Calendula is readily available in tincture form, which can also be used internally or externally.

Calendula is a common ingredient in most topical formulas due to its powerful healing actions on the skin. There are creams, ointments, and salves that help to heal burns, bruises, and cuts while protecting against infection.

Calendula is also available in homeopathic form which is commonly prescribed to help heal any skin ailment, like cuts, rashes, or even sunburn. The homeopathy works best when used in addition to topical applications.

* if you are pregnant, it is advised that you do not consume calendula. Sufficient studies do not exist to deem it safe for pregnancy.

Echinacea... and its many uses.

Erica Campbell Inc.

What a gorgeous plant!

Echinacea is a plant that has deep roots in the practice of medicine.  The native Americans. used Echinacea for more illnesses than any other plant. The root was used externally for the healing of wounds, burns, abscesses, and insect bites; internally for infections, toothaches,  joint pains and venomous bites.

Echinacea was introduced into U.S. medical practice in 1887 and was used to treat conditions ranging from colds to infections, and was known as a powerful "blood purifier". Echinacea was included in the National Formulary of the US and remained there until 1950 (when it was replaced by new MODERN miracles called pharmaceutical drugs).

Today, Echinacea is still one of the most used herbals amongst naturopathic doctors. Echinacea is considered non-toxic, so it is a relatively safe plant to use internally or externally. It has also been deemed safe for use in pregnancy and during lactation!

I have seen that Echinacea is useful for conditions such as the common cold, the flu, respiratory infections, urinary infections,  or serious infections like strep, staph or even MRSA.  I have used it externally as an antiseptic and it has been useful for the healing of wounds, burns, abscesses, and insect bites!

You can use the entire plant, the flower to the roots, to make a medicinal preparation. You can make echinacea into teas which can be used as a medicinal beverage or used as a wash or for skin irritations or infections, or as a vaginal rinse for yeast infections or vaginitis. You can find liquid extracts, which are my favorite form to use, at most health food stores.  Liquid herbal extracts can easily be used internally or externally. You can find alcohol extracts or alcohol free extracts for the kiddos too!

This is a great medicinal herb for you know and have in your own home "FARMACY".
