Our new website has a lovely new graphic that depicts my philosophy on how to restore health. If you have't had a chance to take a peak, please do so here.
The first Step is to establish an anti-inflammatory diet. In a previous post, Eating the Rainbow, I touched on sugar, grains and diary products, which are all high inflammatory foods. In addition, we need to also be conscience about other contaminants in foods such as antibiotics, hormones, pesticides and other toxins.
Part of my job as a naturopathic doctor, specializing in environmental medicine, is to teach my clients how to live health-fully in a toxic world. As I have encouraged you to eat more fruits and vegetables, make sure that you buy organic as much as possible. Many of conventional grown crops can be extremely toxic as they are sprayed with pesticides. Organophosphate pesticides are commonly used on conventional crops here in the US. Therefore, an apple a day won't keep the doctor away - unless it is organic!
Another reason that nonorganic apples aren't so healthy anymore is that they're typically grown in soil that has been degraded by these pesticides and toxic fertilizers. Soil that has been degraded produces crops that are nutritionally lacking. In fact, the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) has reported that the nutrient content of American produce has declined significantly since the inception of 'chemical farming', in the 1950's. Organic foods have more vitamins and minerals than conventionally grown produce, so maybe you are getting your money's worth!
Buying non-organic foods will definitely save you a dime or two in when it comes to the grocery bill but it may be quite an expensive burden in ill health, doctors bill, cleansing, etc. If you budget doesn't allow you to buy everything organic, you can use the EWG.org's "Clean 15, Dirty Dozen" list to discern what you should buy organic. You will definitely want to spend a bit extra for those items on the DIRTY DOZEN list, as they are the most toxic fruits and vegetables. The list changes yearly, but commoners among the list are apples, strawberries, grapes and lettuces such as kale! So continue to eat your 5 colors daily, but choose organic where most appropriate.
In addition, use caution in using pesticides in or around our home. The consequences can be quite detrimental! Pesticides are extremely toxic to the immune, endocrine, and nervous system, and for those little people in the home, children or pets, the affects can be even more of an issue. Studies have shown that children who live in homes where organophosphate pesticides are used have a higher rate of brain tumors!
