Naturopathic Medicine is a way of living that is defined byNaturopathic Priniciples. The first priniciple being, primum non-nocereor first do NO harm. Naturopathy uses gentle healing modalities that aid in your body's own ability to repair, renew, and restore Health.  The philosophy behind Naturopathy is derived in part from a Hippocratic teaching that is more than 2000 years old: Vis mediatrix naturae---nature as healer of all diseases.  For thousands of years, healers have been utilizing water therapies, botanicals, homepathy, nutrition, cleansing, and touch to promote healing.  These tools support the the body's own innate ability to heal.  Naturopathy, or  Nature Cure, is a way of life as well as a concept of healing that employs various natural means of preventing and treating human disease.

Naturopathic medicine is based on a holistic approach combining safe and effective traditional therapies along with modern scientific approaches in medicine. One of the key differences between traditional (allopathic) medicine and naturopathic medicine is that naturopathy focuses on the individual rather than treating based on the generality of symptoms.  Naturopathic doctors try to discover the underlying cause of pathology and then use natural therapies to promote the body’s natural healing process.  These approaches have proven to be successful and safe for a variety of both acute and chronic conditions.

Training
Naturopathic Doctors hold a doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from an accredited Naturopathic medical school. The four-year post-graduate training  is unique in that Naturopathic Doctors study all the conventional medical sciences while also completing extensive academic and clinical education in the use of natural medicines including nutrition, homeopathic medicine, botanical medicine, physical medicine, and counseling.Naturopathic Doctors take a national board exam, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Exam (NPLEX), and attain a state license where it is available*. In licensed states ND’s serve as primary care  practitioners, with the ability to diagnose and treat medical conditions, perform physical exams, and order laboratory testing. In states which do not currently license naturopathic doctors, as in Texas, ND’s may serve as natural medicine consultants.
LicensureNaturopathic doctors in this state that have graduated from an accredited four-year medical program are actively pursuing licensure for the state of Texas.  Our Naturopathic Doctors do hold a license in the state of Arizona.   To support licensure in Texas visitwww.naturopathic.orgorwww/txanp.org.
